What is good writing?

I don't know. I'd like to think I know it when I see it, but I'm not sure. What I do know when I see it is writing that works on me -- writing that picks up ideas and carries them into my mind and sets them in the foyer of my consciousness like unexpected old friends arriving just in time for tea.

This really worked on me:

Okay, sure, the subject matter is an emotional soft spot for just about anyone, but that's not what worked. Pick damn near any post on that blog and you'll find the same punch. The language is plain but powerful. It is direct and yet not, so many of its points made laterally, an explicit detail implying a much broader idea.

But of course I am not up to the task of describing why her writing works so well. Read for yourself and see how it rewards you.

Re: What is good writing?

For me writing is good if you have the exact inspiration.A lot of ideas and words are coming and your heart says write it.
