anyone know of any job leads for a childrens book illustrator?

From what I understand publishers find artists that the trust to be able to consistently produce quality art work in a timely manner.

Only way I know to do it is put together a portfolio and start contacting the publishers and see if you get any bites. 

I would be inclined to use the same resources authors use to find potential publishers.  Writers Market for example is an excellent resource to find names. Just don't blindly contact them, publishers are going out of business all the time so try to confirm they are still around by checking their web site.  If they don't have one they are either gone or not someone you likely want to deal with anyway because they have zero marketability then.
