There have been a number of Lovecraft movies. Let's see, Dagon (based on Shadow Over Innsmouth, not Dagon), Reanimator, Call of Chuthulu, that one with the guy whose half-brother was a Lovecraftian monster (can't recall the title) not to mention at least one episode of Night Gallery (Pickman's Model).

sorry, hit submit too soon.
I can understand folks not knowing about them. I don't recall any of them being very good, except maybe Pickman's Model.

Cthulhu (or similar cults) has become pretty damn common in today's media: webcomics, roleplaying games, movies, etc.
You can find tentacled elder gods bent on spreading evil and chaos in Hellboy, the Dresden Files (demons beyond the outer gates), and others, but the real hallmark of Cthulhu is the psycological horror, which it seems the film has in abundance (from seeing the trailer).
It isn't the real thing if it doesn't freak you out, while confusing you.

yea actually it looks pretty good that was a bit of a surprise i think going w a smaller studio was a good call u know if one of the big sudios/directors had gotten this it would have been tentacle themed splaterporn

Of course. If a big studio got a hold of it, half of the budget would go to CGI, the story would have a comic relief sidekick and a sexy love interest, they would be planing the cthulhu action figures / colectable figurines, the cthulhu video game, the comic book adaptation and prequel, etc.
Why let a good story get in the way of making a profit?
