Schoolies Week
Yes, I'm writing again.
Going through my folder of things that need finishing, and I find three chapters in a Turnam-universe story... and realise I can't finish it in the current climate.
You see, an author named Stephenie Meyer went and ruined it for everybody who wants to write a story about vampires. Now don't get me wrong. I'm a bigger fan girl than any female Twi-hard who ever thudded the floor and made the walls shake, but have you seen book stores lately? When I started this thing (okay, it was awhile ago) it was downright unfashionable to write vampire fiction. Now every second damn book on the shelves is about vampires. If I finish this story I'm going to look like every hack who leapt on the Twilight bandwagon and put out a vampire story that coincidentally graces a shelf next to something by Meyer.
I'd love to finish this story. Really, I would. But I cannot. It would be too... fashionable.

I used to think that pretty much the same, I roleplay on my site as a Vampire..and now I get comments asking if I sparkle..but that doesnt mean you have to give in to the masses. my friend writes Vampire Erotica and has for a long time even before it, its pretty awesome stuff

The fact that I care about the market, as it relates to my work, makes me a realist. It's all well and good to write for oneself, but when it's being published in the real world - and the Internet is a form of real-world publishing nowadays - I prefer to at least factor such things in. Paid or unpaid, I don't care to have my work read in the same context as every hanger-on who suddenly wants to write a vampire story just because they're currently popular. We're all aware that authors of that stripe abound.
There's a world of difference between doing that and crying on an online forum because somebody didn't like my story.

I don't know where that quote is from. I, in fact, heard it in a porn flick. I'm sure that's not its origin. It is quite fitting to the situation.
Your attitude would make sense, IF you were writing for money, as it would be hard to get people to buy your story in such a climate. HOWEVER, here on the Internet at a time like this, a *well-written* vampire story merely stands out from all the crowd of total crap that surrounds it. I write in a genre that is perpetually flooded with complete and utter crap. There are dozens of new stories out every week in the mind control genre. So, should I not write those kinds of stories, ever? Or should I write something that shows how such a story can and should be done, to set myself apart from all the rest?
But it's your choice. If you're not willing to be the diamond among turds, that's your business.

Bravo Eric I wanted o say something like that but you did it for me, Its kinda like peer pressure in my eyes but..like dont NOT do something just because everyone else is doing it, just make it a hell of a lot better then everyone else is doing it

i have to agree with nadez and eric, animus id rather read a good vampire storie from u then twilight anyday i LIKED vamp stories till that shit hole of a book hit shelves now i feel dirty just thinking about vamps so right a storie that will take my dirty feeling away
