Woodward Academy: Callamandian Army Commendation Medals

Woodward Academy: Callamandian Army Commendation Medals

This is a presentation of the military commendations given by the Callamandian Army.  This presentation does not include those insignia given for specific skill sets, or for time in service.

The medals are, from top to bottom and left to right:

Star of Rabb - Designed by the first king and queen of Callamandia, this award is given only to those who have had, by themselves, a significant positive effect on the war effort.  This medal has been rarely awarded throughout Callamandia's history.

Medal of Valor - Also referred to as the "King's Cross", it was once an actual cross, but now is represented by the crossed swords on its face.  This medal is given by assent of the king to those who have performed above and beyond the call of duty on the field of battle, risking themselves to rescue others, capture the enemy, or win the day.

Medal of Merit - Also referred to as the "Queen's Cross", it, too, was once an actual cross, but is now represented by the crossed wand and quill on its face.  This medal is given by assent of the queen to those who have shown exceptional talent, perseverence, or ingenuity in their non-combat service to the army.  Combat soldiers can receive this medal, if they perform some action while not in battle that is worthy of the award.

Verdant Star - This award is given for exceptional service on the field of battle.  This award is granted at the assent of the king, and is given for any act that is considered to have substantially contributed to the effort.

Combat Shield - This medal is given to all army soldiers who have been part of active combat.  The number of stars on the shield represent the number of campaigns within the war that the soldier has participated in.  If a soldier was part of a previous war, as well as the current one, then a red star will be displayed at the bottom of the shield.  To date, no shield with a red star has ever been issued.

Cerulean Star - This award is given for exceptional service to the army off the field of battle.  This award is granted at the assent of the queen, and is given for any act that is considered to have substantially contributed to the effort.

Gold/Green Slash - The Gold Slash is given by unit commanders to soldiers who have performed exceptionally on the field of battle.  On award of a fifth Gold Slash, the soldier is given a Green Slash to replace all five Gold Slashes, and is also automatically referred to possibly receive a Verdant Star.

Silver/Cerulean Slash - The Silver Slash is given by unit commanders to soldiers who have performed exceptionally outside the field of battle.  This award is granted most frequently in non-combat units, but its use is not limited to those units.  If a soldier receives a fifth Silver Slash, they will be issued a Cerulean Slash to replace all five Silver Slashes, and they will automatically be referred to possibly receive a Cerulean Star.

The various slashes are worn in chevron formation, gold/green on the left, and silver/cerulean on the right, as shown in the presentation.

Goldenrod Medal - The Goldenrod Medal is automatically given to any soldier who is injured in the line of duty.  This award is not reserved for combat soldiers only: any soldier injured while performing their service to the king will receive the Goldenrod Medal.

These awards, with the exception of the Star of Rabb, are only to be worn on either dress or work uniforms.  They are never worn on any combat or field uniform.  The Star of Rabb is the exception: a muted version of this medal is to be worn on combat and field uniforms.  The normal, "bright" version of the medal must be worn on dress and work uniforms.  Wearing other medals is optional: this one is not.

Medals are worn above the left breast pocket, below any skill set insignia earned by the soldier.  The exception are the various slashes, which are to be worn on the left breast pocket itself.

It's always awesome to have some background on what we read. In terms of the Star of Rabb, what makes the muted version different to the bright version? Is it more of the blue than the white or is it just smaller?

I like the promise presented by these medals.

Curiosity, are there medals that civilians can earn?

Darthel:

David's already earned four of them: three chevrons, and a crescent.  These are the civilian awards given for service to the kingdom or the crown.  Peace time or war, those commendations are still given.

Right.
I forgot to reference the chevron and crescent, but those two seem to be rather generic.
My question was asking if there might be others, although none of the main characters are really in a position to earn civilian pretties.
