Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

A Genius in King Arthur's Court

Dave Brighton is quite the renaissance nerd: scientific genius, expert archer, and obsessed with the Arthurian Legend. But when he is unwittingly flung over a thousand years into the past, he discovers his favorite story to be far more than legend. Will he be able to find a way home? And if he does, can he avoid damaging history in the process?

Very good story. Premise is good. But it should be noted that the correct form of address for a king is Your/His Majesty not Highness.

So far so good, liking the idea, reminds me briefly of a movie. But just the going back in time part, black knight? I think it was? Good so far regardless of similarities.

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

Thanks to all who have commented thus far!  I'm blown away by the positive response in only the first chapter of this story.  The genesis of this story comes from several places.  First, I've had the idea for a medieval story rattling around my brain for a while now.  With a new twist on the story that I'll be introducing in the next chapter, I felt that the Arthurian Legend was a perfect setting for said twist. (No spoilers yet!)  Finally, as this is a modern man traveling to Arthurian Times, the title is an obvious homage to Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court."  Chapter 2 is now in progress, so stay tuned!

Also, Gray Jedi is still in progress as well.  I'll probably spend the next few weeks getting this story off the ground, then try to juggle the two at once.  We'll see how successful I am!

Enjoying the story, but, I have to ask,why were Lord Byron, his daughter and Sir James travelling without an escort? At least a dozen men at arms would have been standard surely. Plus their personal attendants.

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

Good question, Michael. The group of knights that found Dave and Madeleine were to escort Lord Byron, meeting up with him the moment he entered Camelot's jurisdiction. Mordred just managed to get to them before they got there.

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

I like your start and your writing is good flows well and holds the readers attention.  I am fascinated by the time paradox, Classic-changing your past changes time, therefore time cannot be changed.  Time can be changed but that causes a causual split at each decision or event as it is changed. so the act of traveling to the past just causes another split, you cannot travel to your own past.

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

I have been trying not to jump to conclusions before the 4th or 5th chapter of a story as i usually am insulting when i am. I just wanted to say so far, it's enjoyable, like i said previously. I just have a feeling that it is all way too one sided. But that is just my opinion. Keep writing, i won't know until later.

Keep up the good work. I especially like the way you worked science into magic.  Spooky action at a distance? or better a practical effect of the active observer in quantum mechanics

Really enjoyed the story.  Well put together, and very god prose.  I also enjoyed the link between science an magic.  Looking forward to more chapters.

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

Just a little behind the scenes for you guys. This latest chapter presented a couple of unique challenges for me, in particular that it was the first infidelity I've ever written out. I've alluded to the possibility of it in previous stories, but never in such vivid detail. It was a tough thing for me, as cheating is just something I despise so completely. Still, I hope I captured the right emotions and motivations for Lancelot and Guinevere's scene. If not, please let me know! This is kind of uncharted territory for me. Thanks again for your enthusiastic readership!

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

Keep writing you have me on the edge of my seat awaiting the next segment. I am somewhat like your character David and to have what I can of King Arthur. Even if this is of artificial means it is a good read. Thank you for that.

Did you get inspiration from the Mark Twain book?

Re: Genius in King Arthur's Court, A

Thanks again for your continued readership, and my apologies for taking so long to get this chapter out.  To answer Jay's question, I actually had a multitude of inspirations for this story.  Obviously, Mark Twain's story provided the jump off point for the title, but other inspirations included "Back to the Future," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (2010), and "Avatar: The Last Airbender."  Each of these found some small part in my take on the Arthurian Legend and time travel.  Great question!

Good eye, Neitherspace!  Aang's final battle in "Avatar" was my direct inspiration for that scene.  Call it "lovingly ripped off" if you must!  Heheh...
